DOBBS FERRY, N.Y.- The Dowling College women’s soccer team came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision against Mercy College this afternoon in the East Coast Conference Semifinal game. The Golden Lions move to 11-4-2 on the season as the Mavericks advance to the finals with a 15-2-1 record.
After a 0-0 opening frame, the Mavericks ended the scoring drought with a goal eight minutes into the second half. Jessica DeLeon chipped the ball into the box where Jessica Carrillo’s shot was out of Dowling’s
Melissa Guglielmo‘s reach. Minutes later, the Golden Lions had their first scoring opportunity of the half when
Samantha DiClemente had a shot on goal, but Mercy’s keeper Nicole Augustine held her line keeping Dowling off the scoreboard.
Play continued to go back and forth down the stretch and as time was winding down the Mavericks posted another offensive threat, but a diving save by Guglielmo kept the Dowling deficit at one. With the ball down in Mercy territory, the Golden Lions were given a free kick in the 86
th minute just outside the 18 yard line where Kristen Muir’s left foot put the ball in the box, but
Christine Verrelle‘s header went just left of the net and the Mavericks held on for the 1-0 win.
Mercy out shot the Golden Lions 14 to 10 with an 8-2 corner kick advantage. Guglielmo finished with seven saves on the day with her counter part Augustine recording five.
