WOMEN’S SOCCER BLANKS STAC 2-0

SPARKILL, N.Y.-  The Dowling College women’s soccer team picked up a 2-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College in an East Coast Conference matchup this afternoon.  The Golden Lions improve to 5-2-1 on the season with a 3-0 record in ECC play.  The Spartans fall to 4-2-1 overall, 1-2-0 ECC.
 
Dowling jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the opening frame.  Sophomore Kim Spiciarich took a pass from junior midfielder Allie Merrill on the left side and blasted a shot to the top of the net over STAC’s keeper Amanda Volpe in the 12th minute.  Each side ad three more shots on goal in the half, but the Golden Lions held on to a 1-0 lead going into the break.
 
The visiting Golden Lions extended their lead with a goal in the 70th minute.  Junior Christina Cottone sent a ball into the box and senior Lindsey Thompson got her head on it and put it passed Valpo bringing the game to it’s final 2-0 score. 
 
Dowling outshot the Spartans 15-8 with a 6-2 corner kick advantage.  DC keeper Melissa Guglielmo finished with three saves on the day.  STAC’s Valpo recorded five saves.
 
The Golden Lions return to action as they travel to take on the New York Institute of Technology Bears Wednesday, October 1st at 1:30 PM.
