Box Score SHIRLEY, N.Y.- The Golden Lions scored in each half to come away with a 2-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan College this afternoon at Golden Lions Field. The Golden Lions improve to 3-2-1 on the season, 2-0 in East Coast Conference play. The Red Hawks fall to 0-2 in ECC action.
The Golden Lions struck first in the 13
th minute of play when a rebounded shot by
Christina Cottone was struck to the left side of the net by senior forward
Lindsey Thompson past RWC’s keeper Marissa Sell. Despite outshooting the Red Hawks 10-0 in the opening frame, the Golden Lions went into the break with just the one goal lead.
Dowling doubled their lead just nine minutes into the second half of play when freshman
Astasia Williams-Bertles headed in a corner sent into the box by
Amber Pindulic. Dowling’s keeper
Melissa Guglielmo‘s only real challenge of the day came in the 59
th when the Red Hawks were awarded a free kick from 20 yards out and Heaven Palamitia shot it to left side of the net, but Guglielmo came up the diving save. Dowling’s Kim Spiciarch nearly added to the Dowling lead in the closing seconds, but missed just high as the game ended at 2-0.
The Golden Lions finished outshooting the Red Hawks 18-2 with Guglielmo making two saves. RWC’s keeper Sell finished her day with eight saves.
The Golden Lions return to action Thursday, September 25
th as they travel to Wilmington University. Kick off is set for 3:30 PM.
