WOMEN’S SOCCER FALLS IN OVERTIME

North Andover, MA- The Golden Lions dropped their first game of the season as senior Lindsey Thompson tried to rally Dowling into a victory as she recorded two goals in the second half. Merrimack College would defeat the Golden Lions 3-2 in overtime Friday night.
 

The Warriors struck first in the third minute off a header from six yards out. Merrimack then doubled their lead in the eighth minute as the ball beat the goalie for the second goal of the game.  The Golden Lions trailed 2-0 at the end of the first half.
 

Dowling started off the second half with a strong offense. Lindsey Thompson received a redirected ball and scored a goal from six yards out. Thompson had the opportunity for the equalizer and capitalized as she scored into the left side of the net. Both teams battled back and forth, but neither team could find the back of the net as the second half concluded with a 2-2 tie.
 

Merrimack came out strong in overtime recording two shots early, DC goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo held her line. In the 94th  minute the Warriors’ Marissa Maiolo headed in the game winning goal for the 3-2 victory.
 

Guglielmo finished the game with six saves as her counterpart Meghan Gulbrandsen recorded four. Merrimack outshot Dowling 17-9.
 

Dowling continues their road trip as they take on Bentley University on Sunday September 7, 2014 at 11 a.m.
