AMHERST, N.Y.- The Dowling College women’s basketball team dropped their first contest of 2015 67-59 to Daemen College Friday night at Lumsden Gymnasium. The Golden Lions fall to 2-9 on the season, 2-3 in East Coast Conference play. The Wildcats even out at 5-5 overall, 2-2 ECC.
Junior
Krstina Surlan led all players on the court with 27 points. Surlan went 8-17, 3 for 4 from three point range and added three rebounds and two assists. Seniors
Nicole Caggiano and
Christine Verrelle added 9 points apiece for the Golden Lions, with senior
Kristen McMahon brining down 13 rebounds.
Shy Britton netted a team-high 15 points for Daemen. Sarah Saba recorded 14 points with Raeann Stilwell and Natalie Galus putting in 9 points apiece.
The Wildcats shot 38.7% (24-62), which was slightly better than Dowling’s 37.9% (22-58). Daemen forced 22 turnovers while committing 21. The Golden Lions converted those miscues to 23 points to the Wildcats 17 points off turnovers.
The home team also had a slight edge at the free throw line. Daemen was 14-18 while Dowling went 11-16. The Wildcats won the battle of the boards, 41-38.
The Golden Lions continue their road trip as they face Roberts Wesleyan College Saturday, January 10
th. Game time is slated for 1:00 PM.
