Kerri Handras
Women’s Soccer Head Coach

Kerri McCabe enters her 7th year as head coach of the women’s soccer team after being appointed the program’s first head coach  in the fall of 2005.

In her first year she guided the young squad to the ECAC Semifinals and finished with a 9-6 overall record. In 2007, the Golden Lions ended with a 15-7-1 record, earning the program’s first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament, where they advanced to the second round. That outstanding season earned McCabe the 2007 Big Apple Soccer Women’s Coach of the Year award. McCabe’s squad also earned the NSCAA’s team academic award in 2006 and in 2007 was awarded the Bob Blitz Outstanding Sportsmanship Award by the New York Metropolitan Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association. The NSCAA Coaches Poll also ranked the squad as high as # 9 throughout the memorable season.

McCabe brings a great deal of soccer experience and game knowledge with her to Dowling. She played four years (1998-2001) at Stony Brook University where she was a captain her junior and senior years. In 2000, she was named the Independent Player of the Year and earned Team MVP honors. During her time at Stony Brook, McCabe earned her bachelor of arts in social sciences and her master’s in liberal arts.

Kerri also takes pride in giving back to the community, having received the Dowling College Community Service Award in 2007 and 2008.  The team participates in a mentor program with the Massapequa Stars, a local youth soccer team. McCabe and the Golden Lions act as role models for the U-12 team and stress the importance of academics and educate them on the rigors of being a female student-athlete. The team also participates in the department’s Keep Islip Clean community beautification initiative, LI Blood Services Annual Blood Drive, and Annual Holiday Christmas Drive where they wrap gifts and interact with over 200 less fortunate children from the Oakdale area. McCabe was appointed Dowling’s first women’s head lacrosse coach in the spring of 2006 and in 2008 led the team to a 10-5 record in their inaugural season.

McCabe attended Sachem High School where she was a standout multi sport student-athlete and currently resides in Farmingville, NY.
