WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Dowling College men’s soccer team closes out their regular season schedule with a 2-1 overtime win over the University of the District of Columbia this evening. The Golden Lions improve to 10-5-2 on the season, 7-3 in East Coast Conference play. The Firebirds drop to 9-7-1 overall, 5-5 ECC. The Golden Lions advance to the ECC Championship Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face the No. 2 seeded LIU Post Thursday, November 6
th.
Dowling was first on the board with a goal in the 38
th minute. A foul inside the box prompted a penalty kick for the Golden Lions and senior
Jose Herrera drilled a shot past UDC keeper Ever Alvarez. The Firebirds had an opportunity for the equalizer late in the half, but Dowling’s keeper
Chris Friedl held his line sending the Golden Lions into the break leading 1-0.
The Firebirds tie the game eight minutes into the second half. Felix Angerer’s shot was saved by Friedl, but Nenad Smiljanic’s shot off the rebound moved the score to 1-1. The Golden Lions out shot UDC 12-6 in the half, however, they were unable to find the back of the net and the game was sent into overtime.
Just over two minutes into overtime, freshman
Philip Svensson‘s shot was saved by Alverez, but
Kevin Diaz was they to knock in the rebound for the game winner.
Friedl finished with four saves on the day with Alverez recording ten.
