In their final game at Golden Lions Field, the seniors of the Dowling College men’s soccer team stood out accounting for four out of the five goals in the 5-2 win over Queens College this afternoon. The Golden Lions improve to 8-5-2 on the season, 5-3 in East Coast Conference play. The Knights slide to 4-9 overall, 2-7 ECC.
The Golden Lions jumped to an early lead with a goal in the 28th
minute. Senior Keith Vigorito
headed in a corner kick sent in by Philip Svensson
for a 1-0 advantage. Just eight minutes later senior Jose Herrera
‘s shot from his left foot snuck just inside the right corner for a 2-0 DC lead. In the 42nd minute the Knights were awarded a penalty kick and Altor Gurruchaga cut the deficit in half with a shot to the right side of the net sending the teams into the break Dowling leading 2-1.
Dowling continued their offensive push in the second half as Herrera recorded his second goal with a shot from 20 yards out. Queens got back within one in the 73rd
minute with a goal from Aiton Gurruchaga, but the Golden Lions continued to pour it on as senior Chris Posillico
and junior Mike Gronenthal
each found the back of the net bring the game to it’s final 5-2 score.
Dowling’s keeper Chris Friedl
recorded five saves on the day with QC’s James Brostowski finishing with one.
The Golden Lions return to action as they travel to Mercy College Wednesday, October 29th
. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
