SHIRLEY, N.Y.- In their final non-conference match up of the season, the Dowling College men’s soccer team played Adelphi University to a 0-0 overtime draw. The Golden Lions move to 7-5-2 on the season as the Panthers now sit at 9-4-1.
The Golden Lions first scoring opportunity came about midway through the first half after
Jose Herrera‘s shot from 25 yards out was just high hitting the crossbar of the left side of the goal. About a minute later
Chris Posillico got off back to back shots, but AU’s keeper was able to keep the ball out of the net. Both sides fired five shots in the half with neither sided finding the back of the net.
After a scoreless second half, the teams headed into a rain soaked overtime period. Dowling’s
Raffaele Sorbara was first to get a shot off in the extra minutes, but was wide of the goal and AU took the ball back down field. After Adelphi’s Shane McLaughlin’s attempt missed high, a free kick was awarded to the Golden Lions in the final minutes, but
Andrae Campbell‘s shot was saved by AU’s keeper Ahmad Salamah sending the game to it’s second overtime.
Just before the second overtime period got underway, lightning struck prompting the referees to call the game resulting in a 0-0 tie.
The Golden Lions out shot the Panthers 17-10 with AU holding a 6-2 corner kick advantage. Dowling’s keeper Chris Freidl finished with five saves on the night with AU’s Salamah recording six.
The Golden Lions play their final regular season game at Golden Lions Field this Saturday, October 25
th as they host Queens College. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
