Mike Gronenthal scored twice to lead the Dowling College men’s soccer team to a 4-3 win over Georgian Court University this evening at Golden Lions Field. The Golden Lions improve to 2-2-1 as the Lions drop to 0-3-2.
The Golden Lions took to an early lead when Gronenthal headed in a corner sent in by
Philip Svensson in the fifth minute of play. Just minutes later, Georgian Court tied it up when a cross into the box by Ben Vergara was one timed into the back of the net by Michael Clarke. The Golden Lions retook the lead in the 22
nd minute when a high cross came into the box from
Raffaele Sorbara and found the head of
Kevin Diaz for a 2-1 advantage. Dowling outshot the Lions 11 to 7 with DC’s keeper
Michael Friedl making his first collegiate save.
Dowling kept momentum in the second half with Gronenthal posting his second goal of the night again connecting with Svensson just five minutes into the half. Senior
Chris Posillico extended the Dowling lead to 4-1 in the 57
th minute when he took a cross from Sorbara and snuck the ball past GCU’s keeper Rylan Gentil. In the 63
rd minute, Georgian Court cut their deficit in half on an unassisted goal by Michael Clarke. The Lions came within one in the final minute on Clarke’s second goal on the night, but the Golden Lions held on for the 4-3 win.
Friedl finished with two saves on the night with his counterpart Gentil finishing with four.
