SHIRLEY, N.Y.-  The Dowling College men’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Wilmington University this afternoon at Golden Lions Field.  The loss puts the Golden Lions at 1-2-1 on the season as the Wildcats improve to 3-1-0.

After a scoreless first half, Dowling’s Mike Gronenthal broke through in the 54th minute.  With the ball on the Wilmington half, the Golden Lions were given a corner kick after the ball was knocked out by a Wilmington defender.  DC’s Jose Herrera sent the ball in from the near corner and after a short scramble Gronenthal put it past WU keeper Frank Hall.

In the 89th minute of play, the Wildcats were awarded a penalty kick after a handball was called on a shot in the box.  WU’s Lance Berry lined up at penalty spot and sent his shot past Dowling’s keeper Chris Friedl tying the game up at one.  Neither side could end it in regulation and the game was sent to overtime.

With less than two minutes on the clock, Wilmington’s Femi Akintunde sent a pass to Bruno Montini who then crossed the ball into Jamie Burridge who headed in the game winner to the right side of the net.

The Golden Lions were out shot 12-5 by the Wildcats and both sides were even with six corner kicks.

The Golden Lions return to Golden Lions Field as they host Gerogian Court University Wednesday, September 17th at 6:00 PM.
