BRIDGEPORT, CONN.-  The Dowling College men’s basketball team finished on the short end of a 96-93 decision with St. Anselm College this afternoon at Hubbell Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Bridgeport.  The Golden Lions fall to 0-2 as the Hawks start their season at 2-0.
 
Dowling had all five starters finish in double figures.  Senior Darien Davis had a team high 26 points with seven rebounds, four steals and three assists.  Sophomore Ryan Hickey finished with 15 points and five assists.  Donte Adams and Tristian Brown added 15 and 14 points respectively with Evan Maxwell rounding out the top scorers with a double double of 10 points and 11 boards.
 
The Hawks were led by Chris Santo with 28 points with Ryan Hartung coming off the bench and adding 17 points.  Harrison Taggart finished with 14 points and six assists as Mike McCahey and Taylor Fortin came away with 13 and 11 points apiece.
 
After trailing at halftime by 12, the Golden Lions begain chipping away at the Hawk lead in the second frame.  A layup from Armand Correa midway through the half cut the deficit to 79-71 and the Golden Lions would remain within single digits for the remainder of the game.   Brown brought DC to within two, 92-90, sinking both his free throws with 1:22 left on the clock.   About a minute later, St. Anselm’s Santo hit both his free throws, but Hickey drained a three with :11 pulling the Golden Lions to within one, but two more free throws by Santo with two ticks on the clock securing the 96-93 win.
 
Both teams shot 50% from the field with the Golden Lions shooting 57.9% from long range to the Hawks’ 38.5%.  St. Anselm held a 42-36 rebound advantage with the Golden Lions finishing with a slight 44-42 edge in the paint.
 
The Golden Lions return to action as they travel to Bloomfield College Tuesday, November 25th at 7:00 PM.
