BRIDGEPORT, CONN.- Senior
Darien Davis records his 1000
th career point in tonight’s men’s basketball season opener against No. 2 ranked Southern Connecticut State University at Hubbell Gymnasium. The Golden Lions fell 104-88 in their first game of the 2014 Bridgeport Men’s Basketball Classic.
Davis matched a game high posting 32 points on the night going 12-24 from the field while dishing off five assists. Junior
Evan Maxwell recorded a double double of 18 points 13 rebounds with senior
Jerrell Harris coming off the bench with 11 points.
All five Southern Connecticut starters finished in double figures with Luke Houston matching Davis with 32 points. Michael Mallory was 8 for 14 from the field, 3 for 5 from long range to put up 24 points. Desmond Williams recorded a double double of his own using 21 points and 12 boards with Tylon Smith and Deshawn Murphy rounding out the top scorers with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The Golden Lions finished shooting 41.8% from the field, 33 for 79, and 35% from long distance, 7-20. Southern Connecticut posted a 45.7% from the field, 37-81, with the seemingly the difference in the game 45.2% from beyond the arc, 14-31, in an otherwise evenly matched contest. Dowling held a slight 50-40 edge with points in the paint with both teams taking advantage of 22 point off turnovers with 20 points off the fast break.
The Golden Lions return to the University of Bridgeport tomorrow, November 16
th as they take on Saint Anselm College. Game time is set for 4:00 PM.
