OLD WESTBURY, N.Y.- Sophomore
Ryan Hickey drained a three with ten seconds left on the clock to lift the Dowling College men’s basketball to an 86-85 win over the New York Institute of Technology this evening. The Golden Lions improved to 9-11 on the season and evened out at 6-6 in East Coast Conference play. The Bears slide to 8-12 overall, 5-7 ECC.
In a close game that saw 15 lead changes, the home team held a four point lead after a dunk from Kachi Nzerem with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Dowling’s Hickey was fouled going to the basket and after knocking down both free throws the Golden Lions were within two with 1:22 on the clock. After an NYIT free throw, freshman
Tristan Brown made jumper from the outside closing the gap to just one, 84-83. Following timeouts by both teams, senior
Donte Adams grabbed a defensive board and after Brown took the ball down the court, he dished to Hickey who dropped in a three putting the Golden Lions ahead 86-84 with :10 on the clock. NYIT’s Hooker had an opportunity to tie the game, but he after made his first attempt at the free throw line he missed his final two securing the 86-85 Golden Lion win.
Five Golden Lions finished in double figures with Adams coming in with a team high 25 points. Hickey added 24 points with junior
Armand Correa coming off the bench with 11 points. Brown came away with 10 points and eight assists and junior
Evan Maxwell recorded a double double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The Bears were paced by Hooker with a game high 40 points and eight assists with Nzerem pitching in with 17 points. Khalif Chaplin and Jon Feller finished with 11 points apiece.
The Golden Lions remain on the road as they travel to face LIU Post Saturday, February 7
th. Game time is set for 3:00 PM.
