Five Golden Lions reached double figures as visiting Dowling College held onto an 82-77 win at Queens College this evening. Dowling improves to 6-9 on the season as they even out at 4-4 in East Coast Conference play. The Knights fall to 3-12 overall, 3-5 ECC.
Dowling built a ten point lead, 19-9, after a Donte Adams
three at the 12:40 mark in the opening frame. The Knights then held the Golden Lions to just two points over the next four minute of play as they knocked down 15 taking a 24-21 lead with just under nine minutes left in the half. Dowling continued to trail until the five minute mark when sophomore Ryan Hickey
grabbed a defensive board and after drawing a foul on his way to the basket, he hit both free throws putting the Golden Lions ahead 30-29. Dowling outscored the Knights 10-6 in the final minutes to go into the break leading 40-35.
The Golden Lions continued to lead though the second half, but Queens used a an 8-1 run late in the half to go ahead 66-65 with less than five minutes on the clock. Both sides traded baskets down the stretch, but key free throws from senior Donte Adams
and junior Evan Maxwell
secured the 82-77 win.
Maxwell finished with a double double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Hickey added 16 points with three steals and two assists. Freshman Tristan Brown
and Adams came away with 17 and 15 points respectively with sophomore Michael Guzzardi
rounding out the top scorers with 12 points.
The Golden Lions return to Dowling Gymnasium as they host Molloy College Saturday, January 24th
. Game time is set for 2:30 PM.
