WASHINGTON, D.C.- The University of the District of Columbia had five Firebirds finish in double figures en route to a 104-86 win over the Dowling College men’s basketball team this afternoon at the UDC Sports Complex.
Dowling moves to 6-8 on the season and 4-3 in East Coast Conference play. The Firebirds improve to 3-13 overall, 3-5 ECC.
The Firebirds held the visitors to shooting just 46.1% from the field, 35-of-76, while forcing 13 turnovers. Junior
Evan Maxwell led Golden Lions with a game high 29 points and completed the double double with 12 rebounds. Senior
Darien Davis finished in double digits with 19 points and
Ryan Hickey pitched in with 11 points.
The Firebirds were paced by Omar Abbas with 26 points. Kory Cooley came away with 22 points and Quasim Jones recorded a double double of 15 points and 10 assists. Geran Pope came off the bench and tallied a double double of his own with 19 points and 11 boards. Reggie Sidbury rounded out the top scorers with 13 points.
The Golden Lions were held to just 35% from beyond the arc with the Firebirds knocking down 50% from three-point range. Despite being outscored from long range, the Golden Lions dominated the paint 56 to 42 with both sides taking away 16 second chance points.
The Golden Lions return to Dowling Gymnasium Tuesday, January 20
th as they host the University of Bridgeport. Game time is slated for 7:00 PM.
