Ed Fabian
Induction Class of 2003
Men’s Basketball

Some play a position perfectly, just as it was meant to be. That would describe Ed Fabian at point guard. Fabian had a knack for making everyone playing around him better. The current Dowling College all-time career assist leader knew how to take his team to another level, and had the ability to will a victory if needed. In a four-year career from 1972 to 1976, Fabian led the Golden Lions to four conference championships and a trip to the 1976 NAIA Championship in Kansas City. Dowling College Hall of Fame member Dick Berg (HOF 00′) coached Fabian throughout his whole career and described him as, “an outstanding athlete who led our team”. Fabian had the ability to make constant in-game adjustments to counter opposing teams methods designed to shut him down, “having Ed in the lineup was like having a coach on the floor”, said Berg. After losing only one regular season game in the 1974-75 season, Fabian was nominated team MVP by his coaches and teammates.

Current Dowling College Hall of Fame member and teammate Rich Hernandez (HOF 01′) described Fabian as, “a team leader who always made the right decision on the court and never had a bad game”. Although Fabian had a tremendous effect on those he played with, he too was affected by his experience at Dowling. Fabian remembers traveling to Finland, Denmark, and Sweden during his junior year to play the european pro teams and playing at Madison Square Garden that same season. “The four years I played at Dowling were successful as far a wins and losses, but the experience extended beyond the court as well”, said Fabian. “The friendships I made those four years have continued, and time and time again I cross paths with the people that were a part of my career as a student-athlete at Dowling”.

Today Fabian is a partner at American Eagle Systems Inc., a computer software and service company based in Holtsville, NY. Ed currently lives in Selden, NY with his wife Toni and has three children- Edward (22), Joseph (18), and Gina (16).
