GOLDEN LIONS MAKE HISTORY WITH FIRST FIELD HOCKEY WIN

BROOKHAVEN, N.Y. – The Golden Lions field hockey team won the program’s first game of the season defeating the Newberry College Wolves 5-4.

Newberry struck first with a goal by midfielder Courtlyn Warren assisted by her sister Caitlyn Warren in the 13th minute of  the first half.

The Dowling Golden Lions scored an unassisted goal by Sarah Shams-Kollar to even the game at one goal apiece. Minutes later the Golden Lions took their first lead with Midfielder Kim Geiger, scoring her first goal of the season to bring the game to 2-1.

A goal by the Wolves forward Anna Kate Smith brought the game to 2-2. Shams-Kollar scored her second goal of the game, fifth of the year, to put the Golden Lions ahead 3-2 with 4:21 left in the half.

Ca. Warren tallied another point tying the game at 3 with 3:17 remaining in the half as she capitalized on a a penalty stroke opportunity after the Golden Lions committed a penalty in side the arc.

Golden Lions scored again, making the game 4-3, by the hand of senior forward Kelly Di Fede just under two minutes left in the first half.

Fourteen minutes into the second half,  Dowling’s Jenna Stevenson increased their lead to 5-3 when her shot inside the arc found the bottom left corner of the goal.

Newberry inched withing one, with 3 minutes on the clock, Kaitlyn Willard put in a deflection off DC’s goalkeeper.

The Golden Lions fought to maintain possession taking advantage of Newberry miscues keeping the ball on the on the offensive side as time expired.

Dowling improves to 1-6 on the season as the Wolves fall to 0-7.

The Golden Lions return back to Brookhaven tomorrow, Saturday October 12th as they take on the Bellarmine College Knights at 4:00 PM.
