NEWBERRY, S.C.-  The Dowling College field hockey team fell short in a 3-1 final against Newberry College this afternoon.  The Golden Lions drop to 2-8 on the season as the Wolves improve to 4-6.

After a scoreless first half, the Wolves were first to get on the board 14 minutes into the second frame.  Kaitlyn Willard tapped in a pass from Meghan Smiga for the 1-0 advantage.  Less than two minutes later, Smiga put in a goal of her own to put Newberry ahead 2-0.  The Golden Lions cut the deficit in half with a goal from Melissa Fuerst in the 62nd minute.  But the Wolves answered in the final minute of play when Willard scored her second goal of the day bringing the game to it’s final 3-1 score.

The Wolves out shot the Golden Lions 17-7 with a 9-4 edge in penalty corners.  Dowling’s keeper Ariana Ovadia finished with six saves as her counterpart Mary Greco finished with five.

Dowling returns to Golden Lions Field Friday, October 10th as they host Lindwood College at 4:00 PM.
