BROOKHAVEN, NY – The Golden Lions field hockey team dropped their home opener to the Limestone College Saints 4-1. The Golden Lions now have an 0-4 record and the Saints improve their record to 4-1.

The first home game in Dowling College field hockey history did not go as planned for the Golden Lions. Limestone got off to a quick start when just 13 minutes into the game, Casey Werkheiser put the ball into the back of the net to put the Saints up 1-0.

Limestone was not done scoring in the first half as Rachel Goromonzi recieved a pass from Kate Norman with 13 minutes left and scored a goal. This put Limestone up 2-0 at the end of the first half.

The Saints started off the second half right where they left off in the first half when just 6 minutes in, Brittany Carney made a pass to Stembeni Zhanda and she put it in which put Limestone up 3-0. Just 17 minutes later, the game was put away as Tyller Butler knocked in Limestone’s 4th goal on the day, extending the lead to 4-0.

The Golden Lions did not just lay down and it showed when with about 4 minutes left in the game, Dowling’s Sarah Shams-Kollar broke the shutout out and knocked in a goal that was assisted by Elizabeth Athing. That would be the lone goal scored by the Golden Lions as they would go on to lose 4-1.

The Saints outshot the Golden Lions 16-2 and Limestones goalkeeper Lindsay Hinton saved 12 of the 13 shots she faced.

The Golden Lions next game will be a home game in Brookhaven NY on Saturday, September 28th against Mercyhurst College at 4pm.
