Box Score SHIRLEY, N.Y.- The Dowling College field hockey team earned their first win of the season 2-1 over the Mercy College Mavericks.  The Golden Lions move to 1-3 on the season as Mercy drops to 0-2.

The Mavericks were first on the board with a goal in the 10th minute of play.  After a penalty corner was given to Mercy, Danielle Jones sent the ball into Jackie Ballin who then took a shot from the center of the arc that snuck past Dowling’s goalkeeper Ariana Ovadia.  The Golden Lions evened the score just before halftime when Elizabeth Athing knocked in her first goal of the season from three feet out.

The second half saw a lot of back and forth action with both teams creating scoring opportunities, but it was the Golden Lions who broke the 1-1 stalemate when Jillian Barbieri was awarded a penalty stoke 59th minute and put Dowling ahead 2-1 for the eventual win.

An evenly matched game saw a slight edge with shots is favor of the Mavericks 16-15 and a 19-11 penalty-corner advantage.  Dowling’s Ovadia finished with 11 saves on the day with her counterpart Oliva Kelly recorded seven saves.

The Golden Lions return to action tomorrow, September 14th as they travel to American International College.  Game is set for 1:00 PM.
