Oakdale, NY- The Golden Lions opened up their season with a win over the Setters of Pace University in 3 straight sets.
Janae Giles would lead the Golden Lions with 12 kills and a .667 hitting percentage.
Dowling jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the first game and never looked back. Giles opened up the match off a set from
Maja Potpara to put down the Golden Lions' first kill of the season. That was the first of 4 kills Giles would have in the first game.
Patrycja Klekotka would also put down 4 kills along with 3 service aces for the Golden Lions.
Megan Futch held the back row with 7 digs helping Dowling take the first game 25-13.
Game 2 opened in similar fashion with the Golden Lions starting with a 3-0 lead. It was Giles and Klekotka leading the way again for Dowling with 4 kills each and Klekotka again with 3 service aces. The Setters would not really have a chance as the Golden Lions kept the pressure on and produced solid defense. Susana Verdugo-Del Real for Pace University led their offense with 2 kills. The game would go to Dowling 14-25.
In the 3rd and final game of the match, Monika Kasperek led the Dowling offense, putting down 5 kills. Giles and Potpara would contribute with 4 kills a piece en route to a match win for the Golden Lions. The Setters brought the game within 2 at 9-7, however, Dowling would get their rhythm back put the game away 15-25.
Giles would lead the match slamming 12 kills with Klekotka pitching in with 10 kills and 6 service aces. Potpara produced 25 assists along with her 7 kills for the Golden Lions. Verdugo-Del Real led the way for the Setters with 5 kills as Shea Hansen tossed up 13 assists.
The Golden Lions return to the court Saturday, September 4th taking on the Adlephi University Panthers at 10:00 AM and the Skyhawks of Stonehill College at 2:00 PM.
