Brookhaven, NY - The Dowling College Baseball team split a doubleheader for the second straight day, this time against Southern New Hampshire University.
The Golden Lions took game one, 2-1, on a walk off single from
Daniel Pembroke (Shoreham - Wading River, NY), before falling 3-2 in game two.
Game One
Dowling hurlers dominated for most of game one, as starter
Marc Rutledge (Ridge, NY) threw 5 innings, allowing only 4 hits.
Despite
Rutledge's quality outing, Southern New Hampshire would take the first lead of the afternoon, scoring a run on an RBI ground out off the bat of Eric Pellitier in the top of the 3rd. Kevin Spatkowski came around to score on the play after reaching on a walk and stealing second and third base.
The Golden Lions answered back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 3rd. With one out, senior outfielder
Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY) ripped a single up the middle and
Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY) followed with a walk. After a passed ball allowed
Intagliata and
Squeri to move up a base,
Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY) knocked in a run with a ground out to short.
The score remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the 7th.
Brian Ferguson (Ronkonkoma, NY) started the Dowling rally with a hit by pitch. After
Intagliata sacrificed
Ferguson to second, an
Eddie Squeri groundout would move
Ferguson to third.
The Penmen then issued an intentional walk to
Barnathan to bring
Daniel Pembroke to the plate with the winning run 90 feet away.
Pembroke came through in the clutch, reaching on an infield single to bring in the game-winning run. Southern New Hampshire third baseman Thomas Quicker snagged the ground ball on a diving attempt, but his throw came a split second too late as
Pembroke beat it out to bring home
Ferguson with the winning run.
Senior relief pitcher
Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY) earned the win on the mound, after striking out 5 batters over 2 innings of relief.
Game Two
Game two turned out to be a pitcher's duel between
Nicholas Albero (New Rochelle, NY) and Southern New Hampshire's Bryant Gauthier.
Dowling struck first on the day, scoring a run due to a Penmen miscue in the 6th. With two outs and runners on the corners,
Colin Barnathan stole second base. The catcher's throw sailed into centerfield to allow
Frank Intagliata, who reached base via his third triple of the young season, to scamper home with the game's first run.
The Penmen, who didn't have an answer for Golden Lions' starter
Nicholas Albero over 7 shutout innings, finally put runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Robert Wronski ripped a double down the left field line to put the Penmen ahead 2-1.
Southern New Hampshire added to their lead with an RBI single off the bat of Kevin Spatkowski in the 9th inning.
A late comeback by the Golden Lions would fall just short in the bottom of the 9th. After the bases were loaded with one out by a walk to
Colin Barnathan and singles by
Joel Duverge (Brooklyn, NY) and
Joe Candela (East Quoge, NY), a
Joe Trainor (Massapequa, NY) run scoring ground out pulled Dowling within 3-2.
However, Bryant Gauthier would finish off a complete game, inducing a ground out to end the game with the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Albero, despite 7 innings allowing only 4 hits and striking out 8, did not factor into the decision.
Gauthier earned the win for the Penmen, allowing only 6 hits and 1 earned run to go along with 7 strikeouts in the complete game.
Frank Intagliata kept up his hot streak to begin the season, leading the Golden Lions' offense with 2 hits.
Dowling will be back in action on Tuesday, when Dominican College comes to Golden Lions Field for a 3:30 PM game.
