Brookhaven, NY - After seeing the first eight games of their season canceled due to inclement weather, the Dowling College Baseball team split a season opening doubleheader against the University of New Haven on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Lions took game one on the day by a score of 5-1, before falling 3-2 in the second game.
Game One
In the opening game of the doubleheader,
Gabriel Duran (Brooklyn, NY) picked up right where he left off from his outstanding 2009 season, throwing 5 one-hit innings.
Duran, who despite allowing 6 walks and forcing in a run with a bases-loaded walk, still struck out 7 batters. An infield single to third base in the fifth inning off the bat of Ryan Brockett, was the only hit
Duran would allow on the day.
All of Dowling''s runs in the game one victory came during a five run outburst in the bottom of the third inning.
Brian Ferguson (Ronkonkoma, NY), who finished seventh in all of Division II with hit-by-pitches last season, began his 2010 season in familiar fashion with a hit-by-pitch. Two batters later with one out on the board, senior
Frank Intagliata (Franklin Square, NY) drove the ball deep to right-centerfield for a run scoring triple.
Eddie Squeri (Shirley, NY),
Daniel Pembroke (Shoreham - Wading River, NY) and
Ralph Tufano (Staten Island, NY) all contributed run scoring singles in the inning as well.
Senior
Buddy Cipoletti (West Islip, NY) threw two scoreless innings of relief to finish out the Golden Lions' win.
Game Two
Dowling would strike first in game two, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. After
Frank Intagliata was hit by a pitch and
Eddie Squeri singled to start the inning,
Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third.
Daniel Pembroke would follow with an RBI ground out to second base to give the Golden Lions a 1-0 advantage.
After Dowling's run in the first, starting pitchers
Justin Brooks (West Sand Lake, NY) and Alex Smith of New Haven matched zeroes until the top of the 6th inning.
The Chargers finally broke through against
Brooks in the 6th when Kyle Donnelly ripped a two out single through the left side of the infield to tie the game at 1-1. Jack Heary followed and reached on an error that allowed Donnelly to score and the inning to continue, which set up a Tom Ballaro RBI single for a 3-1 New Haven lead.
Dowling added another run in the bottom of the 9th inning with a
Brian Ferguson sacrifice fly, but Chargers reliever Mitch Rossi stranded the tying run on first base to save the 3-2 New Haven victory.
Despite taking the loss,
Brooks allowed only 1 earned run over 5.2 innings of work. Alex Smith earned the win for New Haven, striking out 6 over 6 innings.
Shortstop
Eddie Squeri led the Golden Lions at the plate with two hits in the second game.
Dowling will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at Golden Lions Field with a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire at 12:00 PM.
