Oakdale, NY - For the third straight time this season, the Dowling College Men's Basketball team defeated the Mercy College Mavericks, 74-67, on Saturday afternoon. Dowling improves to 7-16 (5-10 ECC) on the year with the win. Mercy drops to 1-21 (1-13 ECC).
Over the first twenty minutes, both teams were neck and neck, as the game saw 7 lead changes and 9 ties. Dowling held the largest lead of the first half of 5 points after an old fashioned three point play from
David Seagers (Bronx, NY) made the score 21-16.
Dowling managed to head into the locker room with a 35-34 lead, after two late free throws from
Sean Smith (Copiague, NY).
After the intermission, Mercy scored the first 5 points of the half to take a 39-34 lead.
Midway through the half and after the lead changed hands a few more times, Dowling would take control of the game with a 10-2 run, turning a one point deficit into a 62-55 lead.
The run was punctuated by an old fashioned three point play from
Joshua Lowe (Hauppauge, NY) with 5:09 remaining in the game.
Dowling's lead swelled to as many as 9 points and never dip below 4, as the Golden Lions held on for the 74-67 win.
David Seagers led the Golden Lions in scoring with his 10th straight game in double figures.
Seagers would tally 21 points on the day, while also pulling down 8 rebounds. Dowling also received contributions from
Alioune Ndiaye (Senegal) and
John Merchant III (Monticello, NY), as both recorded season high outputs in points with 11 and 14 respectively.
Mercy had four players in double figures on the day, led by Manny Garcia with 17 points. Bryan Van Cott also had a strong outing for the Mavericks, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
